Car Of The Week – Mercedes Benz G63 AMGALL LUXURY. ALL ROADS.
Iconic cars are a balancing act. You need to keep what made them legendary while still offering modern features and appeal. It’s a tightrope walk between the past and the future. Can Mercedes-Benzwalk the line?
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been a rugged workhorse since 1979. It’s been the German answer to the Land Rover Defender, taking you anywhere and tackling any terrain. While it might not have the same reputation for off-roading as the Defender, its iconic status is undeniable. In 1990, Mercedes started to blur the line between utilitarian workhorse and luxurious SUV. They saw the success of the Range Rover and decided that they wanted to offer the same level of luxury in the G-Class. So, they set out to create an SUV that was both rugged and refined, a vehicle that could go anywhere while also providing a comfortable and luxurious ride. With Mercedes-Benz installing their latest widescreen digital screens to the dashboard and the interior now awash with exclusive Nappa leathers, 64 colour ambient lighting and more technology than you can imagine, the G63 AMG, inside at least, is far removed from the mud plugging workhorse it once was.
Despite all the changes, the G-Class is still true to its roots, providing a rough and tumble off-road experience like no other. But it’s also now surprisingly refined, with a comfortable ride that belies its boxy shape. Thanks to its powerful V8 engine can propel you from 0-60mph in just over 4 seconds. But it’s not just straight-line speed that makes the G-Class such a compelling drive. The accelerating roar and constant idling burble from the twin side-exit exhausts protruding from underneath the side steps on either side means the noise is even more noticeable, and never gets old. With locking differentials, huge ground clearance and wading ability, the G-Wagen can outperform most others when the going gets tough. However, the chances of seeing one anywhere but smooth tarmac is a rare sight indeed.
But that is not the point of this car at all. Land Roverproved decades ago with the Range Rover that luxury and off-road ability can go hand in hand, Mercedes has just taken that idea to the next level with the G63 AMG. Knowing the car can conquer all terrains may be reassuring. Still, the retro styling, abundance of technology and growling V8 soundtrack are the perfect combination to create the ultimate luxury cruising vehicle. The sturdiness of the car is almost unseen in today’s modern automotive industry. From the aggressive stance to the comically loud door locks (re-engineered to ensure the same noise and feel as the previous generation) and the fact that you have to slam the door hard to close it properly, the G63 AMG provides a blend of rugged strength and sumptuous luxury like no other.
