Representinga pivotal shift in Ferrari’s mid-engine supercar philosophy, the 488 bids farewell to the naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8 of its predecessor, the esteemed 458 Italia and Speciale, replacing it with a downsized, direct-injection 3.9-litre Twin-Turbocharged flat plane-crank V8. This new powerplant boasts enhanced efficiency and delivers a monumental surge in power, generating 661 bhp and 560 lb-ft of torque. Recognised for its extraordinary performance, the 488 clinched the prestigious International Engine of the Year Award at the 2016 Engine Expo, sweeping victories in multiple categories. 

Following the debut of the coupe, Ferrari unveiled the 488 Spider, continuing Maranello’s legacy of open-top V8 sports cars. Retaining the coupe’s performance credentials, the Spider introduces a retractable hard top roof, transforming seamlessly into an open-air exhilaration. 

The transition to an open-top configuration necessitated significant alterations, including the removal of the sloping glass rear window, replaced by a flat deck area flanked by flying buttresses. Reinforcements to the multi-metal tub ensure equivalent torsional rigidity to the coupe, albeit with a 50kg increase in kerb weight due to additional bracing and the roof mechanism.
