Following the stunning and very successful 8C, The Alfa Romeo 4C arrived on the scene in 2014 until it went out of production in 2020. Considered by some as the 8C’s baby brother, the 4C offered the 8C’s iconic styling at a fraction of the price. Meant to bring sports cars back to the masses, the 4C was Alfa Romeo’s chance to regain some of its sporting kudos. However, it wasn’t meant to be, and only around 10,000 were ever made.
What the 4C has to offer
Well, quite a lot. The 4C is Alfa’s mid-engined sports car. The engine is Alfa Romeo’s turbocharged, direct injection inline four-cylinder, which is tuned to 237 bhp and mated to a double-clutch gearbox. This might not sound like much, but the 4C has a carbon tub, which means that it still offers sprightly performance. The icing on the cake is that of the 4C’s ‘miniature supercar’ styling. Couple this with the 4C’s classically Alfa Romeo behaviours; it doesn’t take long to be charmed by this baby supercar. The 4C can come in many guises, such as a Launch Edition, Competizione and Spider variants.
Interior and tech
The interior of this car is dominated by the carbon tub underneath you, the exposed sills of which you step over to grant yourself access. Sit in the seats, which are slung low down in the cabin. The flat-bottomed steering wheel offers a sporty touch, as does the carbon peeking over the side of the seat bolsters. With the instrument panel angled towards the driver, you really get the impression that you’re in a cockpit. If it’s not carbon, chances are it’s leather that the dashboard and seats are swathed in. Lacking any infotainment screens, the only entertainment in the dashboard is offered by a radio, mostly due to the car’s age. That’s not what this car is for, though, and it trails behind the competition regarding technology.
What are the running costs?
With a relatively humble four-pot, the 4C can manage 40 mpg combined, improving slightly when you get on a motorway. Not too shabby for a miniature supercar. Carbon emissions are 157g/km, which is impressive for a 160mph sports car. As such, the 4C is highly competitive in its sector when it comes to running costs. Standard, scheduled maintenance for the 4C isn’t too expensive, but any maintenance outside of this can raise the cost significantly. The 4C escapes the highest tax bands as well, falling into a similar tax bracket as its competitors, such as the BMW Z4.
