Mercedes-Benz G-Class For Sale

Used Mercedes-Benz G-Class for sale

The G-Class, or to give its full name, the Gelandewagen, is an iconic Mercedes-Benz design and remains one of the most recognizable cars on the road to this day. Colloquially known as the G-Wagen, it began being available to the public in 1979, after it was first made for military use.

What does the G-Class have to offer

Despite the G-Class becoming more and more luxurious with every update, it still to this day retains a sense of ruggedness, and of being extremely capable when the going gets tough. At its conception, the G-Class fulfilled a similar niche to the Land Rover Defender, but as generations have passed, the G-Wagen finds closer competition from the likes of Range Rover and Bentley with their Bentayga. Thus, in more recent versions of the G-Class, you’ll find not only outstanding build quality but premium materials that cover almost every surface. Modern G-Classes retain their retro good looks. Couple that with almost S-Class levels of luxury, and the G-Class presents a very tempting, complete package. At the top of the G-Class range sits the AMG 63, which has all the practicality, and all the off-road prowess of models lower down the range, but also has enough speed and power that quite frankly bewilder the mind. Don’t forget that the G-Class also has those famous hard-close doors, too. Rare models of G-Class include the monstrous 4×42

Interior and tech

For a machine that is so practical at its core- so capable off-road, the interior truly does defy expectations. Combining that legendary Mercedesbuild quality and premium materials more suiting the S-Class means the interior of a G-Class. The seats in the cabin have quite an upright feel, but there’s not quite as much room on the inside as the exterior might lead you to expect. Tech wise, there’s a big 12.3” touchscreen in the middle of the dash, paired with the driver’s information screen. There’s a plethora of features, including an ‘off-road cockpit’ that displays off-road based information like tyre pressure incline angle, a compass, and a camera-based ‘transparent bonnet’ which means you can see the rock before it scrapes along the bottom of the car. Handy. The G-Class also has a party trick Mercedescalls ‘G-Steering’, which stops the inside rear wheel from turning and adjusts the torque of the others to tighten the turning circle.

What are the running costs

In some more economical models like the G 400d, you could expect up to 21mpg, but in the AMG G53, the fuel economy drops to as low as 15mpg, and CO2 emissions of 369g/km. Neither model was built with aerodynamics and efficiency in mind; however, low scores in that department are expected. Rivals such as the W12 Bentley Bentayga are slightly better, managing 21 mpg and 325g/km. Either car is likely to be placed in expensive tax brackets regardless. The good news, however, is that the G-Class is reportedly reliable, thanks to the typical build quality of Mercedes.
