The story of Alfa Romeo began in Milan on the 24th of June 1910, and took over the Italian Darracq automobile company, based in the outskirts of Milan. Nicola Romeo, Alexandre Darracq and Ugo Stella clubbed together and renamed the brand Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili – A.L.F.A. In 1913, the first Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car was built, and Alfa consequently finished second in the Parma-Poggio Berceto race. Alfa Romeo’s real significance was proved after the war, when in 1931, Alfa provided Italy’s first win at a little race called Le Mans in 1931. The car they did it in was called the 8C 2300. Over the years, Alfa Romeo continued to prove its relevance. He dominated the endurance racing scene at the time, with numerous victories in the Targa Florio, Mille Miglia and many other endurance races. They even won the first two Formula One Word Championships, in 1950 and 1951, and left in the 1985 season. Not content, however, the manufacturer finally made a return in 2019, taking over the Sauber Formula One team. They didn’t stay for long, however, and left in 2023, after being unable to replicate their historical success. The marque has always been known for its iconic design, and still to this day, makes some of the most handsome cars in the market.

Six cylinders lie at the heart of some of Alfa Romeo’s best engines. Most notably, the Alfa Romeo Busso V6. It is not the most powerful, nor by any means, the most reliable engine ever created, yet some will argue that it is simply the best-sounding V6 of them all. Originally designed by Guiseppe Busso in the early 1970s, the engine has appeared in many capacities since. Alfa Romeo’s most powerful engine sits under the bonnet of the Giulia Quadrifoglio in the form of their all-aluminium 505bhp biturbo V6. The engine is Ferrari-derived, and the two Italian marques have long since nurtured a closely linked relationship.
