The BMW 7 Series was first produced in 1977 and continues to be produced today. The most recent version of the car, badged i7, is electric only, which more closely suits the purpose of a luxury saloon.
What the 7 Series has to offer
Surprisingly quick and extremely divisive in looks, the 7 Series is as luxurious as BMW saloons get. Despite being such a large car, the latest 7 Series is highly aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient of 0.24, helping the car to be more fuel efficient. The 7 Series offers models with xDrive, BMW’s ‘all-wheel drive’ system, and the top of the range is denoted by BMW’s iconic ‘M Sport’ moniker. The 7 Series has always faced stiff competition in the form of the Mercedes S-Class, and as such, the 7 Series represents everything BMW knows about luxury saloons. This means that the 7 Series models are very well-rounded and extremely capable.
Interior and tech
The BMW 7 Series is all about the interior and tech, so it should fare well in this section. If you thought the M5 was tech laden, we present to you the 7 Series. The i7 even more so, with the headline being the huge 31.3” ‘theatre’ screen that fold out of the roof for the passengers in the rear seats. The 7 Series has a remarkable interior, with expensive materials and a build quality we have come to expect from BMW. The interior is perhaps not quite as classy as cars such as the Range Rover, but it leaves you in no doubt that the car can back up its luxurious nametag.
What are the running costs?
The i7 that sits at the top of the range is fully electric, and as such will not be costly to charge, though the price will vary according to whether you charge at home or on a public charger. Hybrid models with internal combustion engines, however, achieve 34.5mpg at best without electric assistance- very similar to its competitors. This number sees marked improvement once the electric motor however, so keeping it charged is vital to lowering running costs. The 7 Series achieves combined CO2 emissions of 25 g/km, which is low thanks to the 7 Series’ hybrid system.
