Produced since 1947, the E-Class is the midrange model in the Mercedesline-up, sitting between the C-Class and the S-Class. The E-Class could be the sweet point of the range, balancing a fine line between the C-Class’s more sporty approach and the S-Class’s out-and-out luxury.
What the E-Class has to offer
Perhaps one of the most capable cars on sale. It’s not cheap, but it is extremely well-appointed and impressively refined. It’s spacious, and pretty much all the car you could ever need. The E-Class has a wide range of available powertrains, including a four-cylinder petrol, diesel and plug in hybrid, a six-cylinder diesel with four-wheel drive and a diesel plug in hybrid. At the top of the range sits the E53 AMG, with a plug-in hybrid six-cylinder. Aside from the top spec Exclusive Edition, all trim levels are AMG Line of some description, with advanced, Premium and Premium Plus denoting more expensive versions. The E53 AMG is currently the most powerful E-Class. It gets a 3.0-litre straight-six that shares drivetrain responsibility with a 28kWh. Gone are the twin turbo V8s that could be found under the bonnet top spec versions of old (E63 S). Nevertheless, the E-Class still offers more than enough power for an executive saloon, with 577bhp and 553bhp of torque.
Interior and tech
The E-Class has always had a quality interior benefitting the Mercedesbadge on the bonnet, and the latest model is no exception, with a flashy, expensive feel to the cabin. The dashboard is almost entirely covered by a trio of screens that are all part of one huge glass panel. The latest E-Class more tech than ever, with Integrated 5G conference calling and ambient lighting which is reactive to your music. Not to mention the active steering which can change lanes and overtake for you with a single press of one of the buttons located on the indicator stalk. Otherwise, the interior has got lots of space for four adults. However, the boot of any hybrid versions of the E-Class shrinks considerably, thanks to the higher floor to make room for the battery. The fuel tank gets a bit smaller too.
What are the running costs?
The most efficient pure combustion-engined E-Class is that of the E220d, which claims a fuel economy of 57.7mpg, with CO2 emissions of 128g/km. Hybrid versions can expect a significant improvement, recording 134-156mpg and 46g/km of CO2 emissions for the E 300e. As such, running costs can vary massively from model to model. Mercedes-Benz is known for its high build quality, and the E-Class is no exception, which means the car should be reasonably bulletproof, as far as reliability is concerned.
