The McLaren 675LT, or ‘Long Tail’- a name that pays homage to the famous McLaren F1 GTR Longtail race car, was in production from 2015 to 2017. The 765LT at the time claimed to be the most powerful LT supercar McLaren ever built, which tells you a little of the 765LT’s importance to the marque.
What the 765LT has to offer
The McLaren 765LT is a more track-focussed version of the McLaren 720S, which was no slouch to begin with. Lighten. Sharpen. Intensify. LT is to McLaren what RS is to Porsche. The 765LT has a bonus 45bhp over the 720S which it is based on and is 80klg lighter. The weight saving begins with the carbon tub, and ends with nets attached to the door instead of door bins, reportedly saving 800g. In total, the car weighs in at 1,339kg or 1388kg if you go for the Spider. Essential items to note in terms of weight loss are the seats, wheels and titanium exhaust. You can go the full mile, however, by visiting McLaren Special Operations, who will replace door skins and the rear bumper with carbon panels, saving an extra 7kg. This is a company that does not spare the details, which is a quality that can only benefit the 765LT.
Interior and tech
The interior has not been spared from McLaren’s weight-saving attack. The dash trim is visibly leaner compared to the 720S, the seats’ padding is almost non-existent, and the dominant materials include carbon and Alcantara, which suit the car’s more track-oriented approach. The 765LT has a suitably purposeful look about it. Tech is more reliable than McLarens of the past, although it’s important to note that the 765LT’s system doesn’t support Apple CarPlay, which hinders the car’s usability and might be expected. The 765LT keeps that excellent rotating display found in the 720s, which flips to show only the most vital information whilst the car is in track mode. Although practicality could never be a strong point of a car with such a dramatic shape, the weight saving hasn’t impacted the 765LT’s practicality in comparison to the 720S upon which it is based.
What are the running costs?
The 765LT records 23mpg combined and 280g/km of CO2 emissions. Naturally not a strong point of any supercar. Rivals such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS are similar in running costs, managing 21.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 289g/km. Although the McLaren’s list price is significantly higher than the Porsche’s, their purpose as lighter, harder, more track focussed performance cars makes them close competitors. Overall, it’s good to know the 765LT is reportedly reliable, with important items such as the engine, gearbox and brakes being solid.
