Ferrari’s first V6-powered road car was produced in 2022. The 296 is a two-seater offered as a GTB coupe and a GTS folding hard top convertible. It evolved from Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined two-seater sports Berlinetta concept.
What the 296 has to offer
The 296 couples its V6 with an electric motor powering solely the rear tyres to generate a mind-blowing 819bhp. The EV-only range is a mere 15 miles, but it is good for sneaking away from neighbours before opening the taps. The V6 saves a chunk of weight over Ferrari’s V8, too, and is mated to an eight-speed twin-clutch gearbox. The Ferrari 296 has active aero that increases downforce to ensure the 296 sticks to the road. The 296 also has typically beautiful Ferrari styling. As the number suggests, the 296 is brutally quick, and Ferrari aimed to make the 296 ‘fun to drive’. The 296 also has the option of an Assetto Fiorano pack, which adds more carbon, swaps out the dampers and contributes to an overall weight saving of 12-15kg. The ‘frunk’ is also a little bigger than the SF90.
Interior and tech
The cabin resembles the SF90’s, which by no stretch of the imagination is a bad thing. The steering wheel houses some of the 296’s most useful functions, with Ferrari’s famous Manettino wheel finding its home on the wheel and a surprising amount of touch-sensitive controls. A digital display can be found behind the steering wheel that can display speed, revs and gear selection. There is no central infotainment screen to be found; instead, there is just an air vent angled almost exclusively towards the driver with a row of buttons beneath. Unfortunately, some of the multimedia controls can be awkward to use. The seats are carbon-backed, and just behind them is where Ferrari keeps the electric motor.
What are the running costs?
As the badge on the bonnet might lead you to expect, the 296 is not a cheap car to run in any sense of the word. If you’re worried about emissions, then this might not be the car for you, but since we’re here… the 296 has CO2 emissions of 149 g/km- not as bad as you might expect thanks to its hybridity- and achieves a fuel economy of 20-27 mpg. Make no mistake, maintenance is expensive, and sticking to the service schedule is imperative, thanks to Ferrari’s infamous reliability.
