The Ferrari 458 had a very successful production run from 2009 when it stepped in to replace the 430, until 2015 when its production ended and to this day, the 458 remains highly desirable thanks to its stunningly good looks and roaring, 4.5-litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine.
What the 458 has to offer
Did we mention the 458 is good-looking? Well, if I didn’t, the 458 is most definitely a looker. Sold as Ferrari’s swansong to naturally aspirated V8s, low mileage 458s will almost certainly be future classics. There are several reasons for this, one of which is that the V8 engine sat behind the driver. The 458’s engine is responsible for producing a remarkable 562 bhp at 9,000 RPM, which helps power the 458 from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. The 458 also offers a huge leap in performance over its predecessor, the F430. The 458 came as a convertible denoted by the name Spider and a runout model called the Speciale, which differs from the 458 Italia in that it lost a not-inconsiderable 90kg and gained a stripe down the length of the bonnet, roof and boot.
Interior and tech
One of the 458’s most notable new features is its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The German company Getrag’s first DCT, which can be found in the 458, offers almost no latency between gear shifts- less than 50 milliseconds. The interior has aged almost as well as the exterior, and although the 458 is devoid of tech such as infotainment screens, relying solely on TFT screens on either side of the rev counter to display information. The seats are low-slung and covered in leather. The sections of the dash are broken up by air vents on either side of the square-bottomed steering wheel, which houses the all-important Manettino switch and Engine stop/start button.
What are the running costs?
The Ferrari 458 manages a 21mpg combined WLTP, meaning real-world performance will almost definitely be lower. Carbon Dioxide emissions sit pretty high at 307 g/km, according to the WLTP test. Naturally, Ferrari servicing costs will be high, and electrical problems can be challenging to solve. There was also a problem early in the 458’s life where the rear arch liners had a tendency to combust, but most models still around should have had the lining replaced by now. Otherwise, the 458’s engine can prove to be surprisingly reliable.
