Jaguar History & Motorsport

Jaguar, a renowned British manufacturer, started business in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company. Founded by Sir Willam Lyons alongside William Walmsley, Swallow Sidecars initially began by producing motorcycles before the first car with the Jaguar name on it was made in 1935- the SS Jaguar 2.5l saloon. Landmark moments arrived in 1948, with the introduction of the Jaguar XK120, followed by perhaps the best-looking sports car of all time- the Jaguar E-Type. A while later, Jaguar produced the world’s fastest car for a time, the Jaguar XJ220. Not limited to just the road, Jaguar also found success in motorsport, with the most wins of Le Mans for any British manufacturer- seven. Jaguar also holds the time for the fastest lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife for a saloon car with the Jaguar XE SV Project 8. Today, Jaguar participates in motorsport, being an early adopter of Formula E, most recently winning the 2024 Word Championship.

Jaguar Engines & Performance

Perhaps Jaguar’s most iconic engine belongs to the XK, which was last fitted to a production car some 39 years after its debut. The XK is an inline, 6-cylinder, dual overhead camshaft engine that produced 180 bhp in its first iteration. On the other hand, the Jaguar XJ220 was supposed to come with a 6.2litre V12 in concept, but instead, that was replaced by a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine, giving the Jaguar brand somewhat of an affiliation with six-cylinder engines. The Jaguar V12, however, was regarded as one of the best engines in the 1970s and 80s and brought the marque two overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and 1990.
