The Mercedes-Benz A-Class was first produced in 1997, though the A-Class as we know it today did not come into production until two generations later, in 2012. This update shaped the A-Class into a much more desirable modern package, which the car sorely needed.
What the A-Class has to offer
At the top of the range is the A35 and then the A45(S)- both of which are made by the AMG department at Mercedes. Although expensive for a hatchback, at around £60k list price, the A45 is supremely competent, with a 2.0-Litre 4cylinder turbo engine that churns out 415bhp and 369bhp, meaning the A45 makes for a devastatingly capable car, which unless you need the space for luggage or a large dog, is also more than practical enough for everyday use, thanks to its hatchback configuration. Not subtle enough to be described as a scalpel- more like a chainsaw, the A45 is deceptively fast, and not uncomfortable either. On the outside, the A-Class is a handsome machine, with higher spec models such as the A35 and A45 getting sporty additions, including rear spoilers and a front splitter to toughen up the car’s rounded looks. There are also various limited-edition versions of the A-Class, including the Night Edition.
Interior and tech
Styling has not changed significantly since 2012, with Mercedesmostly focussing on tech. The A45 is able to monitor lots of information about proceedings, including yaw sensors, steering angle, throttle percentage, and power distribution (which is typically 50:50) between the axles. The A45 does this via a mechanical slip differential at the front and an electronic one at the rear. The interior is of good quality, and later versions of the A45’s dashboard are dominated by a two 10.25” screens that are now standard in every A-Class that will keep the tech-savvy happy. Just below the screen on the left are three turbine vents and a row of controls, all of which have an aluminium effect. Space in the rear seats can be cramped, especially if the front seats have tall people in them, but space in the front is much more generous.
What are the running costs?
In the top spec A45S, the least environmentally friendly A -Class, Mercedesclaims up to 32.8mpg, which you can expect to worsen once you’re out in the real world. The A45S also emits 208g/km of CO2 emissions. Similar cars, including the Audi RS3, manage a similar 30mpg and 217g/km of CO2 emissions. Safe to say, despite the A45S not being economical, which high-performance cars usually aren’t, it’s competitive in its class- slightly better, in fact, than its closest rival.
