McLaren History & Motorsport
Founded by Bruce McLarenin 1963, the first ever car to bear the McLarenname was the McLarenM1A, of which just 24 were produced. Not long later, McLarenwould find their first Formula One victory at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix, since delivering 187 Grand Prix wins, 12 Drivers’ World Championships and 8 Constructors’ World Championships. McLarenhave five wins in the GT Championship, every single win in the iconic F1 GTR Long Tail, which debuted in 1997. McLaren is also one of only three manufacturers to complete the Triple Crown of Motorsport with wins at the Indianapolis 500 in 1974, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, and the Monaco Grand Prix in 1984. It was only a matter of time until McLarenturned their attention to road-going production cars, and when they did, they made it count. The first ever McLarenproduction car just so happened to be the McLarenF1. The greatest supercar of all time.
McLaren Engines & Performance
McLarenhas had some incredible feats of engineering put into some of their engines. The McLarenf1 had a 6.1-litre, naturally aspirated V12 that produces a staggering 627bhp, with a 7500 rpm redline. This, along with famous designer Gordon Murray’s best attempts to make the car lose weight (a fully laden F1 weighs not much over a tonne), made the F1 the fastest production car in the world at the time, with a top speed of 240.1 mph. Famously, the F1 features gold leaf in the engine bay, as Murray’s team found that this was the best material at reflecting heat, which the F1’s engine produced a lot of. To this day, McLarenengines today remain as impressive feats of engineering. The M840T engine that can be found in the 720S is a 4.0L 90-degree, twin-turbocharged unit.
