The Audi R8 is a different breed of supercar – a car that’s equally at home on the streets as on the track. With the latest generation Audi R8 poised to hit the roads, we’re taking a look at what’s so special about the different generations of the Audi R8 Coupé and Audi R8 Spyder that has helped them become one of the most popular everyday supercars.
The R8 generations
In 2017, Audi unveiled the R8 V10 RWS, a limited edition of its supercar, boasting rear-wheel drive, a departure from the quattro line-up and a delight for enthusiasts seeking spirited driving experiences. With no front differential and a lighter overall build than its Quattro counterparts, it promised enhanced fun behind the wheel. Limited to 999 units each for the coupe and Spyder versions, demand skyrocketed, leaving many disappointed. However, Audi later introduced the R8 V10 Performance, also rear-wheel drive, offering a more fun and track-focused alternative.
The R8 Spyder
The R8 Spyder was first showcased in early 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show but wasn’t released until late 2010/early 2011 with two models: the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro and the Spyder 4.2. Regardless of generation this car is the epitome of open-top motoring luxury combined with high-performance engineering. With a design that seamlessly marries elegance and aggression, this convertible supercar commands attention on the road.
The R8 V10 derivative
The heart of the R8 V10 Performance lay in its 5.2-litre V10 engine, delivering 562 horsepower to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Weighing 65 kilograms less than its Quattro counterpart, it boasted adaptive suspension, electromechanical steering, and standard ceramic brakes, facilitating faster laps and controlled drifts on the track.
The future classic
The end of the R8 era could be good news for existing owners, as it has all the fundamentals to become a sure-fire future classic. All generations of enthusiasts appreciate the R8, and interest is growing. With supercar performance paired with the liveability of a daily driver, the Audi R8 might just be the collector car to have if you could only have one. We anticipate that over time, the purity and clarity of the original vision and the sweetness of the driving experience will become ever more highly coveted as we move into an era of electrified and increasingly automated transport.
